Redeemed From Sickness

 

Lu.4:16:   And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17: And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19: To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

 

Every where Jesus went, He taught the gospel of deliverance.

Healing the sick was part of His message.  How do we know this?

We know that people got healed every where He went,   don’t we.

The Gospels record  many of these healings.

 

Jesus went about proclaiming the Gospel of healing as part of the

redemption message.

 

We know that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

Ro:10:17:  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

 

These people had to have heard the Word concerning healing, or how else could they have had faith?

 

• You can not have faith outside of the Word of God.

 

Everywhere Jesus went it seems there were a few who stood out, these were people who did something above and beyond what others were doing,

these people were written into the Gospel message as an example to us.

 

There were times Jesus would point to someone and tell them your faith hath made you whole!

 

Lets look at a few of these.

 

Mt.9:21: For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, 

I shall be whole.

22: But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

 

Mt:9:29: Then touched he their eyes, saying,  According to your faith, be it unto you.

 

Mt:15:28: Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt.  And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Mk:2:5: When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, 

Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.

 

Mk:5:34: And he said unto her,  Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole;

go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

 

Mk:10:52: And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.  And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

 

Lk:5:20: And when he saw their faith,  he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

 

Lk:7:50: And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

 

Lk:8:48: And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

 

Lk:17:19: And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

 

Lk:18:42:  And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight:  thy faith hath saved thee.

 

Mt.8:5. And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6: And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy,  grievously tormented.

7: And Jesus saith unto him,  I will come and heal him.

8: The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof:  but speak the word only,

 and my servant shall be healed.

9: For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10: When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

11: And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

12: But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13: And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.  And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

 

Mt:9:2: And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.

 

Ac:14:8: And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother's womb, who never had walked:

9: The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,

10: Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.

 

 

Acts:10:38:  How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

 

• Healing all that came to him in faith.   As the scriptures we just read say.

 

• What Jesus did, He had the legal right to do.

 

Not because he was God,  but because He walked under His rights and privileges of the Old Covenant. The Covenant that God set up with Abraham.

The same rights and privileges,  that all the children of Abraham had.

• These people came to Jesus in faith, but their faith had to be based on something. It had to be based on Gods Word.   Their faith was based on the promises of the Old Covenant.  The New Covenant wasn’t established at this time,  was it?

 

• If it wasn’t based on God’s promises, they wouldn’t have been able to have any faith,  because   faith only comes where the promises of God are known,   and they didn’t know the promises until Jesus came along and Proclaimed them. 

 

• This doesn’t mean the promises weren’t there, only that they were

ignorant of them.  The religious rulers weren’t teaching these truths.

 

Jesus came along and demonstrated the reality of the Word of God.

For the first time,  these people saw the reality of their Covenant,  and responded in faith!  And received the blessing for it.

 

• You had to hear the salvation message preached before you could get

saved didn’t you?   Faith comes by hearing.

It works the same way for healing.  You have to hear the Word.

 

We pray for peoples salvation, Jesus showed us how to pray.

 

How often have we prayed Lord, please save so and so? 

Jesus has already done every thing He is going to do.

He has already paid the ultimate price.

 

Rom:10:14: How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

 

Lk:10:2: Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

 

• Woman with the issue of blood.

 

Mk:5:25.  And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

26. 26. And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27. 27. When she had heard of Jesus,  came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28. 28. For she said,  If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
29. 29. And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.
30. 30. And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
31. 31. And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32. 32. And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33. 33. But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34. 34. And he said unto her, (Daughter),  thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

 

 

Jesus called her daughter because, she was a daughter of Abraham, and she had a right to the blessings that God had Promised Abraham,  through the Covenant He made with him.

 

• Woman with the issue of blood.

1. She heard the word of God. That created faith.  Faith cometh by hearing.
2. She spoke faith. She said if I may touch the hem of his garment,  I shall 

     be healed of the plague.  

3. She acted on her faith. She made her way through the crowd and touched His garment.           
4. She received. She felt in her body that she was healed of the plague.
5. She proclaimed it. She fell down before Him and told Him all.

 

• All these people received healing or deliverance by faith, based on the promises of the Old Covenant.

 

We must always remember, that faith has to be based on the Word of God.

And Gods Word,  is Gods will.

 

Deuteronomy 28: 15-22, 27-29, 35, 58-61

15. 15. But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:
16. 16. Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field.
17. 17. Cursed shall be thy basket and thy store.
18. Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep.
19. 19. Cursed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou goest out.
20. 20. The Lord shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.
21. 21. The Lord shall make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou goest to possess it.
22. 22. The Lord shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish.
23. 27. The Lord will smite thee with the botch of Egypt, and with the emerods, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed.
24. 28. The Lord shall smite thee with madness, and blindness, and astonishment of heart:
25. 29. And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore, and no man shall save thee.
26. 35. The Lord shall smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore botch that cannot be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head.
27. 58. If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, The Lord Thy God;
28. 59. Then the Lord will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.
29. 60. Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of;  and they shall cleave unto thee.
30. 61. Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the Lord bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

 

• The curse of the law is three fold.

1. Spiritual death, 2. Poverty, 3. Sickness.

• Sickness is a part of the curse.

It is very clear from these scriptures, that sickness is a curse of the law.

The 61^st verse says that every sickness and every disease are part of the punishment for breaking God’s law.

The King James  version of the bible would lead you to believe that God Himself would put these sicknesses and afflictions upon His people

It reads  the Lord shall smite thee.

 

Dr. Robert Young a world renowned Greek and Hebrew scholar,  author of Young’s Hebrew and Greek concordance,  said in his book  (Hints to Bible Interpretation),  points out that, in the original Hebrew the verb is in the permissive tense, rather than in the causative sense. He said that it should have been translated something like this.   ( The Lord will allow these plagues to be brought upon you.)

 

The original Hebrew of these scriptures was in the permissive tense, but because the English language has no corresponding permissive tense,  the verbs were translated in the causative tense.

 

God does not cause sickness and disease, or put it upon His people, that would put him in league with the devil.   Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil.  Glory to God.  He came to give us life and to give it more abundantly.  There is no sickness in Him,   and we are in Him.

 

• He allows them to come upon us, because He doesn’t have a choice.

When God’s people broke His commandments they no longer were under His divine protection, all He could do was permit the devil to bring these afflictions upon them.  

 

By looking upon these scriptures we can conclude that sickness and disease are a part of the curse of the law.   Isn’t that right.

 

BUT

 

Galatians 3:13.  Christ hath redeemed us  from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us:  for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

14: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ;  that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The Old Covenant provided for healing under provision God made for being obedient to the law. 

 

Then if the Old Covenant provided healing , we know we are in a better Covenant.

 

He. 8:6: But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better Covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7: For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

 

In Luke, Jesus healed a woman , and the ruler of the synagogue became angry, because Christ  had healed the woman on the Sabbath.

Jesus said,

 

Lk:13:16: And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?

 

Jesus said,  Satan hath bound this woman.

 

Why should she be loosed,?   because she is a daughter of Abraham,

that’s why!   She had the legal right to be loosed.   Bless God!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Sickness is not the will of God!

Jesus in His earth walk was the will of God in action.  He came to unveil the Father to us.

 

Jn.1:14: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

 

He.1:1: God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

2: Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

 

• We already read:

Acts:10:38:  How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

 

 Young's Bible

Isaiah 53:4  Surely our sicknesses he hath borne, And our pains - he hath carried them, And we - we have esteemed him plagued, Smitten of God, and afflicted.

5:  And he is pierced for our transgressions, Bruised for our iniquities, The chastisement of our peace [is] on him, And by his bruise there is healing to us.

 

Matthew quotes part of this.

Mt. 8:17: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

 

Peter by the Holy Spirit looking back on Calvary wrote in the past tense.

 

1Pe.2:24: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were  healed.
